Continuous Improvement & Effective Project Management with Sure Step
By James Herrett, Regional Consulting Manager
At Serenic, as well as with other software companies, success can be short-lived without appropriate focus on Continuous Improvement in all areas of a business’ operations. Part of that Continuous Improvement focus involves repetitive evaluation of core business processes and putting in place methods to improve them.
Active Project Management is a routine part of every accounting software project we undertake today. But that doesn’t preclude it from the evaluation and improvement cycle that we want to maintain at Serenic. So our Client Services team is using the Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step certification program as our opportunity to revamp, refocus and reshape our Project Management activities for our nonprofit, NGO and public sector implementation projects.
Currently, Carla Moe is our Client Services resource who is solely dedicated to the Project Management function for various software projects we work on. The basis for allocating a sole PM resource to projects tends to be larger and more complex projects where our Application Consultant and Project Management roles cannot afford to be commingled or “mashed”. While longer term goals will be to add more of such dedicated Project Management resources to our team, the shorter term will be bolstered by adopting as much of the MS Sure Step methodologies and tools as are appropriate on a per project basis. This will allow us to provide our consultants with a more consistent set of tools to manage projects beginning in our involvement in the sales cycle on through project deployment and support.
Attending the Sure Step certification training classes is a worthwhile effort. While anyone who has PM experience will likely attest, Sure Step is not a revelation of new concepts and ideas. What it is, however, is a nicely organized and well put-together set of tools and guidelines that can be used to help manage projects with varying levels of complexity and size. Due to our wide variety of nonprofit client segments and sizes, we don’t have the ability to roll out the same project plan, scope of work and various other management tools for them all. Where the Sure Step tools will come in great use, is to build the appropriate sets of tools with the correct details included for our various types of projects. Tailoring them to be project-specific then becomes a much less labor-intensive effort. We expect this to lead to more accurate and effective Project Management activities on projects where a dedicated PM resource isn’t currently practical. It’s a common sense approach to improvement and using this Sure Step certification program as a springboard to get us started is something we are excited about!
