Denver, CO - The Mile High City
Located between the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains, Denver is known as The Mile-High City
due to its official elevation of one mile above sea level. Denver’s history started when gold
deposits were discovered in 1858 near the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry
Creek. Gold turned all eyes toward Colorado and set off a gold rush stirred by the slogan,
"Pikes Peak or Bust!" After Colorado’s admittance into the Union in 1876, Denver became
the state capital.
LoDo (lower downtown) is where the gold was first discovered and is seen as Denver’s oldest
neighborhood. The Lower Downtown Historic District was formed in 1988 and successfully
granted historic status to 127 historic structures. Also during this time LoDo began to
experience a renaissance. New businesses like the Wynkoop Brewery started to pop up and
slowly LoDo became a destination neighborhood. In 1995, Coors Field opened on the edge
of LoDo which helped revitalize the new neighborhood with clubs, restaurants, art galleries,
stores and other businesses.
With 300 plus days of sunshine per year in the Mile High City, Explorations 2010 will be an
experience you don’t want to miss!
