Nonprofit and NGO Financial Management Case Studies
Navigator 2009: RSF Social Finance
RSF, based in San Francisco, offers investing, lending and giving services that generate
positive social and environmental impact while fostering community and collaboration among
participants. RSF is the first organization to install Serenic Navigator 2009 and benefit from its
enhancements. The updated software system applies Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 technology
and functionality to Navigator’s core features. Navigator 2009 includes a new User
Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) through the use of Role Centers that leverage
productivity features within the newest Dynamics NAV platform. Within days of implementing
Navigator 2009, RSF’s employees are now benefitting from the system’s great simplicity and
new features.
Partners in Health (PIH)
PIH’s mission is to provide preferential options for healthcare for the poor in its nine locations
around the globe. With more than 6,000 employees and a $65 million annual budget, PIH is
able to help more than 2 million patients a year as part of its efforts to break the vicious cycle
of poverty and disease. PIH used disparate financial systems across its six major
locations, making fund consolidation and reporting difficult. The organization was
searching for a fund accounting system that could provide a common solution across its global
locations in multiple currencies and languages. PIH implemented Serenic Navigator
for complex fund and project management and its centralized global system that
provides views across all languages and currencies.
mothers2mothers (m2m)
m2m is a multinational NGO with a mission to create an effective, sustainable model
of care that provides education and support for pregnant women and new mothers living with
HIV/AIDS. At more than 500 sites across Africa, m2m has helped over 800,000 women in
the last year live long and healthy lives, deliver many healthy babies,
caring for their families and having hope for the future. m2m needed to implement
a financial management system with a true fund accounting solution that could help
it handle cost allocation, grant management and consolidation of all data from
various countries using multiple currencies. Just three months after implementation, m2m has
benefitted from streamlined financial reporting across its sites using Serenic Navigator’s
consolidation feature.
Family Health International (FHI)
FHI is a leading global health and development organization with a mission to improve lives
worldwide through the synergistic strengths of research and programs in public health. More
than 2,300 employees enable FHI to carry out its programs in more than 55 countries. FHI needed
to replace several outdated accounting programs with a modular financial management system that
would incorporate fund accounting, handle multiple currencies, respond to the needs of a diverse
set of funders and grant requirements and match its complex geographic requirements. Serenic
Navigator for Microsoft Dynamics NAV was selected and has been implemented in 10 FHI locations
to date.
Arc of Middlesex County
The Arc of Middlesex County is one of 20 chapters that make up the Arc of New Jersey – a statewide, private, nonprofit advocacy organization incorporated in
1949 by a group of parents who had a vision of building a better quality of life for
people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
The Arc of Middlesex County is one of the oldest and most respected organizations working on behalf of people with disabilities. Its
mission is to provide support and services which encourage personal growth and quality of life through empowerment and choice.
The Arc was using an obsolete system for its accounting. As a contractor for the State of New Jersey, it needed to update its
financial management capabilities with a system that met its specific tracking requirements. The Arc of Middlesex County
implemented Serenic Navigator for Microsoft Dynamics NAV in 2006.
American Urological Association
The American Urological Association works on behalf of its more than 16,000 members
to pursue its mission: fostering the highest standards of urologic care
through a wide range of services, including publications, research,
continuing medical education, an annual meeting and the formulation of health policy. Tracking financial data for three
separate business groups called for the AUA to seek a more updated, flexible financial management
system that would accommodate its specific needs – deferring revenue and expenses associated
with special events and giving non-core users access to data. The AUA went live with Serenic Navigator for Microsoft Dynamics NAV in January 2007.
Denver Zoo
Denver Zoo, one of the largest and most popular zoos in the United States, had an
IT infrastructure made up of disparate financial systems. This made it difficult
for employees to access the financial data they needed to operate effectively. Wanting
to take advantage of a fully integrated system, the IT team decided to implement
Serenic Navigator - certified by Microsoft Dynamics™. Since going live in April
2006, Serenic Navigator has already provided Denver Zoo employees with faster and
easier access to real-time financial data.
Diocese of Fargo
The Diocese of Fargo was founded in 1897 and includes 13 schools, 136 parishes in
the eastern half of North Dakota, with 102 priests serving a Catholic population
of 85,570. Prior to implementing Serenic Navigator, the organization struggled to
find an accounting software product that could handle both the routine and specific
requirements needed in the three different types of entities it serves: a traditional
diocesan multiple funds and multiple department structure, a foundation structure,
and a deposit and loan structure. The Diocese of Fargo and many other archdioceses
and dioceses have selected Serenic Navigator, certified for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, as
the system best suited to provide the flexibility, scalability and business application
depth they require.
Trans World Radio
Trans World Radio (TWR) is an international Christian broadcasting ministry that
has been proclaiming the Good News of God for more than 50 years. TWR began a search
in 2001 for a new global fund accounting system because its former system was no
longer supported, making it far too expensive to maintain. TWR also looked for an
accounting system that could grow with it, not a system limited to today's requirements
only. After considering over 50 products, TWR selected Serenic Navigator to meet
its global requirements.
Philadelphia Zoo
More than 1,600 animals from around the world, 42 acres of picturesque Victorian
gardens, stunning artwork, and historical architecture set the scene for America's
first zoo on Philadelphia. As with most non-profit organizations, the Zoo needed
to do more with less - to maximize every dollar of revenue it collects. To that
end, the Zoo initiated a search in 2002 for a fund accounting solution that would
increase operational efficiencies and better manage expenditures. After evaluating
several fund accounting solutions that claim to have NFP-specific functionality,
the Zoo selected Serenic Navigator.
University of Virginia Alumni Association
Headquartered on the main campus in historic Charlottesville, the University of
Virginia Alumni Association is the primary communications channel between alumni
and their alma mater. The primary responsibility of the Association's board of managers
is to administer more than $50 million donated each year to the University's various
foundations, scholarship programs, and trusts. In order to maximize efficiencies
and eliminate redundancies, the association wanted a modern fund accounting solution.
After a thorough review of the marketplace, the UVA Alumni Association selected
Serenic Navigator.
