mothers2mothers Implements Serenic Navigator - Accounting Software for NGOs to Support Its Programs for HIV-Positive Women Across Africa

"Other NGOs can learn from m2m's experience that implementing a financial management solution is an achievable goal. Having the right solution in Serenic Navigator, coupled with a committed and honest implementation partner, has been essential to our initial success with the new software."

mothers2mothers (m2m) is an innovative mentoring program offering comprehensive support for HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers in Sub-Saharan Africa, which shows the highest statistics of mothers and babies infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Founded in 2001, m2m grew from a single support group in Cape Town to a multinational NGO in just over four years.

Worldwide, one percent of pregnant women are HIV-positive, of which 95 percent of these women live in Sub-Saharan Africa. Without care, about 24 percent of mothers transmit the virus to their newborns, and each year about 3 million of these children will die from HIV/AIDS-related illnesses.

m2m recruits, trains and employs mothers living with HIV who have completed a pregnancy. These "Mentor Mothers" serve as peer mentors and educators to HIV-positive new mothers and pregnant women – becoming an integral element of clinical prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) care.

Scenario

m2m currently operates in 680 sites across Africa which are co-located within medical care facilities. All activity is overseen by its head office in Cape Town, which houses management and key support staff, as well as the regional staff for the Western Cape. The organization employs more than 1,600 people in nine countries. Prior to purchasing Serenic's solution, m2m was using Sage Pastel software for accounting.

"We needed additional features to manage our finances more efficiently," said Michael Allpass, m2m's CFO. "Handling multi-currencies in the different countries m2m operates in was increasingly challenging as we grew.”

The organization wanted to find a newer financial management solution that would provide:

  • True fund accounting software
  • Multi currency features
  • Cost allocation
  • Consolidation of all data from various countries
  • Grant management

m2m considered an upgraded Pastel solution, but ultimately chose Serenic Navigator based on the product's track record and its ability to deliver its desired features. In March 2009, m2m completed the first phase of its implementation of the core financials and in July 2009 implemented AwardVision and Jet Reports.

Benefits

In just three months' time - with 10 users up and running to date - m2m has realized immediate benefits that include streamlined financial reporting.

"Serenic Navigator's consolidation feature has been key to merging financial transactions from all of our sites and enables uniform reporting across the four different countries in which we operate," Allpass noted.

As it adds Serenic modules and users, m2m is looking forward to being able to do indirect cost allocation and to following its grant process from proposals through program implementation expenditures.

"Other NGOs can learn from m2m's experience that implementing a financial management solution is an achievable goal," said Allpass. "Having the right solution in Serenic Navigator, coupled with a committed and honest implementation partner, has been essential to our initial success and results with the new software."
