NonProfit Case Studies

American Psychological Association

The American Psychological Association (APA) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychologists in the United States and seeks to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people’s lives. The organization needed to replace its financial management system and conducted a formal review to find a solution that met its unique requirements and would serve as the foundation to build additional services. The APA chose Serenic Navigator as the new financial platform. Efficiencies they now enjoy include hourly updates which make information timely across multiple systems (including web transactions), built-in workflows, and ease of use which helps users get up to speed quickly.

Chimes International

Chimes International offers a wide range of support for people with disabilities and special needs. It helps more than 17,000 people annually by emphasizing and promoting the unique abilities of individuals while achieving and sustaining each person’s well-being and independence. The organization wanted to update its aging financial management system with new software built specifically for nonprofits’ needs. Chimes chose Serenic Navigator with its familiar platform to replace the Microsoft Dynamics NAV system it used for more than 12 years. Since implementing Serenic Navigator, Chimes has saved time by rolling remote office data into one consolidated report, and is storing complex financial records electronically so they can easily pull queries and reports for audits.

Trans World Radio

Trans World Radio Global media ministry (TWR) is among the world’s most far-reaching Christian networks. It provides programming and other spiritual content in more than 200 languages and dialects across 160 countries. After benefitting from Serenic Navigator’s productivity and multi-currency capabilities since 2003, TWR wanted to upgrade to Serenic Navigator 2009 across its 30-person finance department – with accounting staff in nine different countries and data transferred between servers in five geographic locations. TWR was one of the first Serenic clients to upgrade to Serenic Navigator 2009. It had been four years since the organization’s last upgrade, so its users looked forward to new ease-of-use features and functionality built into the system’s user interface, resulting in a greatly enhanced user experience.

Archdioceses and Dioceses

Religious governance organizations such as archdiocese and dioceses operate in a variety of scenarios. Whether control of financial information is centralized, de-centralized, or a combination of both, their needs are best met by an integrated financial and revenue management solution. Strong financial reporting, the ability to manage individual church/parish deposit and loan activities, the management of bill-back transactions for services rendered, and the ability to support business relationships between the governance operation and the local churches and schools are just a few of the features critical to their ability to serve their missions. Many archdioceses and dioceses have selected Serenic Navigator, certified for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, as the system best suited to provide the flexibility, scalability and business application depth they require.

Arc of Middlesex County

The Arc of Middlesex County is one of 20 chapters that make up the Arc of New Jersey – a statewide, private, nonprofit advocacy organization incorporated in 1949 by a group of parents who had a vision of building a better quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities and their families. The Arc of Middlesex County is one of the oldest and most respected organizations working on behalf of people with disabilities. Its mission is to provide support and services which encourage personal growth and quality of life through empowerment and choice. The Arc was using an obsolete system for its accounting. As a contractor for the State of New Jersey, it needed to update its financial management capabilities with a system that met its specific tracking requirements. The Arc of Middlesex County implemented Serenic Navigator for Microsoft Dynamics NAV in 2006.

American Urological Association

The American Urological Association works on behalf of its more than 16,000 members to pursue its mission: fostering the highest standards of urologic care through a wide range of services, including publications, research, continuing medical education, an annual meeting and the formulation of health policy. Tracking financial data for three separate business groups called for the AUA to seek a more updated, flexible financial management system that would accommodate its specific needs – deferring revenue and expenses associated with special events and giving non-core users access to data. The AUA went live with Serenic Navigator for Microsoft Dynamics NAV in January 2007.

Philadelphia Zoo

More than 1,600 animals from around the world, 42 acres of picturesque Victorian gardens, stunning artwork, and historical architecture set the scene for America’s first zoo in Philadelphia. As with most non-profit organizations, the Zoo needed to do more with less – to maximize every dollar of revenue it collects. To that end, the Zoo initiated a search in 2002 for a fund accounting solution that would increase operational efficiencies and better manage expenditures. After evaluating several fund accounting solutions that claim to have NFP-specific functionality, the Zoo selected Serenic Navigator.

University of Virginia Alumni Association

Headquartered on the main campus in historic Charlottesville, the University of Virginia Alumni Association is the primary communications channel between alumni and their alma mater. The primary responsibility of the Association’s board of managers is to administer more than $50 million donated each year to the University’s various foundations, scholarship programs, and trusts. In order to maximize efficiencies and eliminate redundancies, the association wanted a modern fund accounting solution. After a thorough review of the marketplace, the UVA Alumni Association selected Serenic Navigator.

Muscogee (Creek) Nation

Today the Muscogee (Creek) Nation operates a more than $106 million budget and has more than 2,400 employees. It has tribal facilities and programs across eight districts of the Muscogee Nation and serves more than 60,000 enrolled tribal members. The Muscogee Nation needed to replace its soon-to-be obsolete financial management system with software that could help manage its large-scale funding and program spending for more than 300 separate budgets, along with incorporating human resources and payroll software. The Muscogee Nation implemented Serenic Navigator Advanced Management Edition – certified for Microsoft Dynamics NAV – as well as Serenic Human Resources and Payroll.

NGO Case Studies

African Wildlife Foundation

African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is the leading international conservation organization focused solely on Africa. By protecting Africa’s wildlife and wild landscapes, the AWF is working to ensure prosperity of Africa and its people. And they’ve been successfully doing this work for more than 50 years. “Right now, we are administering about 70 or so active grants,” explains Jeff Chrisfield, CFO at AWF. “Our grants come in all sizes. We accept and track restricted grants starting at about $25,000, but of course they go up into the multimillions. And that’s 70 grants spread across different programs that span nine geographical regions. Our challenge is weaving together the tapestry of funding…” Serenic Navigator has been able to meet their need for a control process without having to hire lots of overhead finance people for each field office. “With Serenic, you get the segregation of duties by distributing the responsibilities. It centralizes procurement away from the field office.”

mothers2mothers (m2m)

m2m is a multinational NGO with a mission to create an effective, sustainable model of care that provides education and support for pregnant women and new mothers living with HIV/AIDS. At more than 680 sites across Africa, m2m has helped women live long and healthy lives, deliver healthy HIV-free babies, to care for their families and have hope for the future. m2m needed to implement a financial management system with a true fund accounting solution that could help it handle cost allocation, grant management and consolidation of all data from various countries using multiple currencies. m2m implemented Serenic Navigator Advanced Management Edition, along with other applications within the Serenic Navigator extended product suite.

Partners in Health (PIH)

PIH’s mission is to provide preferential options for healthcare for the poor in its nine locations around the globe. With more than 6,000 employees and a $65 million annual budget, PIH is able to help more than 2 million patients a year as part of its efforts to break the vicious cycle of poverty and disease. PIH used disparate financial systems across its six major locations, making fund consolidation and reporting difficult. The organization was searching for a fund accounting system that could provide a common solution across its global locations in multiple currencies and languages. PIH implemented Serenic Navigator for complex fund and project management and its centralized global system that provides views across all languages and currencies.

Municipal Water District of Orange County

The Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) ensures water supply availability and reliability for the 28 retail water agencies and cities it serves in California. Its conservation programs help save more than 2.9 billion gallons of water each year. MWDOC wasn’t satisfied with its previous two financial management solutions and wanted to implement a fully-integrated Microsoft Windows-based system that could better handle the complexity of its multiple grants and programs. Based primarily on the promise of its award/grants management system, MWDOC chose Serenic Navigator Advanced Management Edition – certified for Microsoft Dynamics NAV – for its 10 concurrent system users and an additional 30 web users.

Metropolitan Sewerage District of Buncombe County

The Metropolitan Sewerage District of Buncombe County (MSD) is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.
